This is a difficult subject to tackle. On the one hand, it is important that these items are disposed of properly and as much recyclable material is reused as possible; here in the U.S. There are companies who operate clandestinely and send broken and outdated CRTs and CPUs to foreign countries where they sit in piles near the lowest income areas and children are paid to sift through and collect parts that can be sold for a profit. There is a huge effect on the landscape and environment from these practices.
On the other hand when considering other recyclables such as glass, plastic bottles, paper and metal it is the consumer's responsibility to return the items to a recycle center. Where would we be if Anheuser Busch, Coca-Cola or Mead were responsible for ensuring that their products were properly recycled?
