The Bleeding Edge Gaming podcast is excited to announce that it has moved to NetCast Studio! NetCast Studio is the home of a variety of podcasts covering many topics. We’re very happy to become a part of the NetCast Studio family. The weekly podcast will now be hosted on the NetCast Studio Bleeding Edge Gaming podcast page. We’ll still have a link on our main menu to make it easy for you to find us.

Why move? NetCast Studio maintains a very high level of quality with all of their shows. It’s a privilege to be a part of that and work with them to ensure that our show meets that level of quality. Currently NetCast Studio produces Waves of Tech, Busy Ladies, Google At A Glance, Ctrl-Alt-Deliver and A Look At Lego. We are seeking individuals who would like to get involved as co-hosts recording weekly podcasts within specific genres.

Current Availability

Two shows are temporarily retired as new talent is located. Flash Past and Sports Unleashed. Flash Past is not your average podcast. The guests discuss about pop culture history and their own experiences with and without it. This is an opportunity for listeners to learn a bit about the origins of some of the most memorable trends and events in our country’s history. Sports Unleashed is a weekly discussion with unleashing thought. Sports Unleashed takes you from the freshly cut green grass on the baseball diamond in early spring, to the frozen tundra of the football gridiron in late winter.

Scouting, Electronics and Technology

In the last 100 Years technology has taken on many shapes. It’s hasn’t all been about computers and staying connected. In the early days of Scouting so were the early days of aviation. Then came advancements in electronics, medicine, nuclear science, space exploration, the micro chip, and the list goes on. Scouting needing to stay true to its origins also had an obligation to keep up with the rest of the world and attract what I call “the youth of the moment” over the last century of its existence. The Merit Badges over the last 100 years are the most obvious examples of the changing world.

With these constant changes in the world around us, comes more demand. The youth of today find the use of a computer to be second nature and so obvious. Many wonder how the “old folk” got by without it.

But the facts are certain. If youth are to be given and attracted to the opportunity to learn about the principles of Scouting found in the Scout Oath and Law, then Scouting has to keep up with them or risk the losing interest in being part of this great program.

Well the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America provided a wonderful opportunity to make a significant leap forward. Recently Bob Mersereau National Director of the 100th Anniversary at the Boy Scouts of America said in an interview focusing on technology: “We realized this (100th Anniversary) was our once in a lifetime opportunity to remind the nation in a big and bold way that Scouting has never been more relevant or needed than it is today. The BSA has made significant strides in using technology to reach and engage young people. We’ve gotten active on social media channels like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter and have incorporated really fun and even cutting-edge technologies into our programming routine including:

The 12th edition of the Boy Scouts of America Handbook is available via an iPhone app plus there is an accompanying website that is designed to enhance the overall experience.

Over the next year, we are introducing three new technology-oriented merit badges including Robotics, Inventing and Geocaching.

During our centennial celebration in Washington D.C., the BSA hosted Scout Quest, its first digital scavenger hunt using smart phones, QR codes, Facebook and Twitter.

One of the greatest things about Scouting is that we have stayed true to our mission for one hundred years. The fundamentals of Scouting — service to others, respecting and embracing the outdoors, doing your best, achieving your potential — are timeless. As long as our country needs strong leaders and healthy young people, it will need Scouting.

Although, we do recognize that more than ever we must be nimble and flexible in the ways we reach out to young people and parents in today’s fast-paced, high-tech world.”

WOT 103 – Twitter Customer Service and The Jukebox

Welcome in to Episode 103 of Waves of Tech. We span the tech sector in this week’s podcast. We stretch the topics to include customer service, the tablet market, applications, old school music gone new school, and personal security. First, Dave shares his positive customer service experience with an ISP via Twitter. Have it come to the point where customer service via a social medium is easier than a phone call? We discuss.

Sony has jumped into the table market with some pretty appealing models, S and P. The new tablets will be running Android and range from $500 to $600. The P is particularly interesting in its design, functionality, and appeal. Check out what we have to say. Also, in an attempt to keep their town clean and free of graffiti, a local government has found a cheap, effective way to communicate and report graffiti through a smart phone application. Residents can now simply take a picture of the graffiti and send it in. No phone call. No being placed on hold. Does your local law enforcement have such an app? You may wanna check it out.

Steve brings a bit of nostalgia to the podcast. Remember the days of the classic jukebox? The vinyl, the turntable, the limited selection? In the 21st century, many restaurants and bars now have Internet-based jukeboxes with a near limitless selection of music. Technology has a way of professing around us without us knowing and this is a good case in point. Finally, from a personal security point of view, thieves are now using thermal imaging cameras to steal ATM pin codes. This is a prime example of using a great technology in a perverse way. Did you know that Pensacola is America’s oldest European settlement? A lot of people give that credit to St. Augustine, FL… but they do so erroneously. Pensacola was actually founded before St. Augustine, but a hurricane wiped out the settlement and it wasn’t resettled for over 100 years. St. Augustine has been constantly inhabited since its founding. Pensacola is also the birthplace of Florida. It was here, in Plaza Ferdinand, named after King Ferdinand VII, that Florida was ceded by Spain to the United States in 1821.

Pensacola is also the cradle of Naval Aviation and the home of the Blue Angels and the National Museum of Naval Aviation. The guys talk flying, museums, restaurants, clubs, music, and of course, fun. Supposedly, in the 9th Century an Ethopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats were full of energy after having eaten the berries from a particular plant. His story doesn’t appear in writing until 1671 so the truth behind it is a bit questionable. After several years the bitter pick me up made its way across Africa and into Europe. Eventually it even made it to North America to be sold for $6 mixed with sugar and milk.

The guys also discuss colas, including the original cola – Coca Cola. They then move on to talk about tea, energy drinks and the caffeine quantities in various beverages. Did you know that there are 330mg of caffeine in a 16oz Starbucks coffee or a whopping 1.2mg in Canada Dry Diet cola?

Around 400 BC the Chinese developed kites, some believe, to be used as part of religious rituals. They have, throughout time, been used for everything from fun to fighting. Hot air balloons were developed around 200 AD but their use as a form of transportation didn’t begin until the late 1700s when Jacques Montgolfier floated some livestock around for a few minutes. By the 1850s George Cayley was thinking of moving man via glider. 1903 rolls around to find the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, and Samuel Langley separately working on inventions that they hope will forever change the way that people get from place to place. The Wright brothers were the only ones who were right. Less than 25 years after the Wright brothers make history Charles Lindbergh makes aviation history by being the first man to complete a solo trans-Atlantic flight. He was followed five years later by Amelia Earhart.

Show Notes

Beginning in the late/mid 19th century people began to put motors on bicycles. This type of innovation spread across Europe and several motorized bikes were developed at roughly the same time. As a result, motorcycles don’t have a clearly defined beginning machine however it was likely steam powered.

Early motorcycle producers included Germans Daimler and Maybach, France’s Perreaux. Other European motorcycle producers include BMW, Triumph, Ducati and Norton, among many others.

Harley Davidson and Indian were the first American motorcycle companies and they were competing for the same audience. The 60s and 70s brought an influx of Japanese made motorcycles. They were less expensive and more reliable than their American made counterparts. Eventually American products regained their reputation but there were already thousands of loyal owners of bikes made by Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki among others.

Joe Louis: The “Brown Bomber” is arguably the best boxer in history. He held the world heavyweight boxing title longer than anyone in history, twelve years. He would successfully defend the title 25 times, scoring 20 knockouts. His first loss came from Max Schmeling in 1936. He would go another 14 years until his next loss.

Pete Rose: Rose is one the of the greatest hitters in the history of Major League Baseball. He compiled over 4,200 hits and earned 17 All Star appearances. With his three World Series rings, a Rookie of the Year award, and three batting titles, he earns his legendary status in MLB history. The gambling allegations in the 80s tarnished a perfect career.

George Blanda: “The Grand Old Man” had the distinction of playing 26 seasons of Professional Football, the most in the sport’s history. He holds numerous football records: one of two players to play in four decades, 1st player to score over 2,000 points, and most passing TDs in a game to name a few. He was inducted as a first ballot Hall of Famer in 1981.

Jim Thorpe: Thorpe played in a time a racial inequality and spawned the growth of Native Americans into domestic and international sports. He is considered to be one of the most versatile athletes in modern sports, playing football, baseball, and basketball. As an Olympian, he won gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon.

Carl Lewis: Before Lewis, Track & Field drew limited attention in the US. The 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles would make Lewis a household name in America. Lewis won 10 Olympic medals and 10 World Championship medals, 17 of his 20 medals were Gold medals. He was an image of American sports and represented the sport and the nation finely.

Arnold Palmer: Palmer compiled 94 professional golf victories including 7 major championships. The majority of his wins came in the years of 1960-1963 where he won 24 PGA Tour events and dominated the competition. Palmer helped with the founding of the Golf Channel and clearly loved the game of golf and respected its heritage.

Willie Shoemaker: Willie won 11 Triple Crown races and was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1958. Winning his first race at the age of 15, Willie would go on to record a total of 8,833 career victories.

Muhammad Ali: Being a 3-time World Heavyweight champion places Ali in the top three boxers of all time. He is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame and holds victories over seven other inductees. Ali also defeated every top heavyweight in his era, which has been called the “Golden Age” of boxing. He made headlines with his outspoken criticism of the Vietnam War.

Arthur Ashe: Professional tennis player known for his humanitarian efforts during retirement.

Billy Jean King: An advocate against sexism in sports and society, founder of humanitarian organizations.

Johnny Unitas: The “Golden Arm” made 10 Pro Bowl appearances and won 4 MVP Awards.

Babe Ruth: The Bambino defied the odds with his off-the-field antics and holds several MLB records.

Did you know that the beginning of the age of the “thrill ride” began with Catherine the Great? In fact, in Spanish and French, roller coasters are referred to as Russian Mountains. These slides were wooden frames covered in snow and ice. The evolution of the coaster takes us from these snowy hills past mine trains with switchbacks to wooden structures with rises and falls to tubular steel structures that try to leave your stomach a few hundred feet away from the rest of your body. There are even “coasters” that are actually just pods that are hydraulically powered to give the impression and sensation of actually riding a coaster without the danger.

The guys talk about the coasters that they’ve ridden and give impressions of them. Some of them hurt, some jabbed in places that they shouldn’t and one changed Dan’s perspective on thrill rides. Was it a positive or a negative change? Coney Island, Disney World, Six Flags over Georgia all the way to Disneyland and Steve has only ridden two coasters.

That document is called the Declaration of Independence.

Dan and Steve talk about what it was, or might have been like, at the first 4th of July celebrations. They also talk about grilling, illegal fireworks and small town, all-day festivities. Did you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be America’s bird for the great seal?

Timeline

June 1776 – A committee was formed to create the formal Declaration of Independence. Lead by Thomas Jefferson with the assistance of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.

June 28, 1776 – Thomas Jefferson presents the first draft of the declaration to congress.

July 4, 1776 – A vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor of the Declaration; 2, Pennsylvania and South Carolina voted No; Delaware was undecided and New York abstained.

August 1776 – The signing of the Declaration of Independence began on 4 July but was’t actually completed until August.
July 4, 1777 – The first Independence Day celebration takes place.

Fun Facts

○     The only place where the flag is never flown at half-mast is the moon.
○     Our national mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive
○     “The Star-Spangled Banner” started out as a poem named “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” and was written on the back of an envelope
○     More hot dogs are consumed on the 4th of July than any other day of the year

6. Microsoft details early Windows 8 improvements to OEMs

Deatils are leaking about the new Windows 8 operating system. Since Windows 7 has been out for over a year already Microsoft needs to make a move on the next OS. Features of this new OS will include USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0. Microsoft is also mapping out details on “Instant On PC’s”. which will take the “POST” out of PC’s and allow the OS load faster than an previous Operating Systems.

What is a Podcast ???

Before diving into a lengthy explanation of what a podcast is, let’s look at the word “podcast” itself. First mentioned by Ben Hammersley in a 2004 Guardian newspaper article in which he rattled off possible names for this booming new medium, the “pod” of podcast is borrowed from Apple’s “iPod” digital media player; and the “cast” portion of podcast is taken from Radio’s “broadcast” term. As a mater of clarity, just because it’s named after Apple’s iPod, does not necessarily mean that you have to own or use an iPod — or any portable digital media player for that matter — to enjoy a podcast.

Okay, with that out of the way, back to the original question: “What’s a podcast?”

A “podcast” is sort of difficult to explain because there really isn’t anything else like it — but rather, many things that are kind of like it.

A good starting point, is to think of a podcast as “Internet Radio On-Demand.” It’s similar in that you can usually listen to it on your computer — but it’s more than that. [However, and not to confuse the issue, podcasting isn’t confined to just audio but can be video as well].

It has well over 100,000 content specific “channels,” which are sure to suit just about anyone’s interests, and is available on the Internet. So, in a sense, it’s kind of like a Library.

With the amount of content that podcasting provides, regular Broadcast Radio, or “Terrestrial Radio” — as they call it — simply can never compete. The AM and FM radio band only has so many channels. Consequently, radio stations “Broadcast” their content — meaning that they attempt to appeal to as broad of an audience as possible. Because, afterall, this is what advertisers are looking for. But podcasting, by contrast, is not necessarily hamstrung to advertising revenue like its broadcasting cousin. With its specific and specialized content, it is able to “narrowcast” to only those who choose to listen. So while a particular podcast’s audience may be considerably smaller than the audience of a broadcast, one could argue that the podcast’s audience is a much more targeted and interested in the content being delivered. So, in a way, Satellite Radio, with its ability to provide more channels than Broadcast Radio, takes a step towards podcasting — but still does not come close.

Podcasts are “On Demand” and can be listened to on your schedule — not when a Radio Station decides to air it. So, it’s kind of like TiVo.

Each podcast has a website it calls “home” (like ours at www.spinalcolumnradio.com) where show episodes can be listened to or downloaded for future listening. With downloaded media, you can either listen to it on your computer or take it with you by transferring it to an iPod or any other portable digital media player. So, in this way, it’s kind of like a small paperback book.

The RSS icon allows you to subscribe to a podcast. Click on it to subscribe to ours!

But what truly makes a podcast unique, and what gives a podcast its “casting” ability, is how it is able immediately deliver itself to multiple podcast directory websites (such as iTunes, Podcast Alley, and Podcast Pickle) and podcatcher applications (like iTunes, Juice, and Zune) through a process of syndication known as RSS (Real Simple Syndication). Listeners can easily “subscribe” to podcasts (most are free) by clicking on its RSS icon or subscription button (ours is located in the upper left hand column). The listener is then walked through how to add that podcast’s syndication “feed” to a podcatching application of their choosing — or even good old-fashioned email. So, when a podcaster releases a new episode, subscribers are automatically notified without having to constantly check back with the podcast’s website to see if a new show has been produced. And, with the podcatching software, episodes of their favorite podcasts can be automatically downloaded and, if they choose, transferred to their portable listening device — all without having to lift a finger. So, in this way, podcasts are like magazine subscriptions.

Podcasts can be produced by just about anyone wanting to share and communicate with the world. They are not exclusive to Big Name Media. So, you could also say that podcasts are like Blogs.

Because podcast websites usually have ways for listeners to leave comments about each episode, and literally enter into a discussion with other listeners, podcasts are like a community of individuals sharing a common interest. And with an estimated 47 million podcast listeners out there in 2010, that’s a pretty hefty community.

Kind of cool if you ask me.

WOT Podcasting Techniques

It has been asked how the Waves of Tech develops, record, edit and distribute our Podcasts. Though the Waves of Tech crew is relatively new at podcasting, we have years of experience in the digital realm. A bit of history –

When we first decided to create a podcast there wasn’t much information on the web to get started. As with most podcasters, trial and error was the best method and over the past few months we have acquired better equipment and most importantly became smarter with product integration, pre and post production.

Pre-Production

The Waves of Tech uses shared Google Docs to prepare our show agenda and go over the outline in a pre-production meeting. Communications with the cast members is via Skype.

Feeds and hosting

Production

* A Skype conference call is established through the Mac Book Pro and the rest of the cast members using USB headsets
* The show host uses a MXL 990 microphone plugged into the XLR mixer connector.
Skype is feed into the Multil Mixer through a Griffin iMic to convert the Mac’s Mic in and Headphones jack into USB
* A MSI U100 mini is used to feed sound bites and music into the mix
* All mixed audio is feed through the mixer into an Edirol digital recorder.
* Completed recording is saved from the digital recorder in WAV format.

Post-Production

* The exported WAV file is loaded into Audacity to convert the stereo recording from stereo to mono
* The next steep in post-production is running the podcast though a product called Levelator which adjust the audio levels.
* Lastly, Ubercaster is used for post production editing, ID tagging and MP3 release.

Release

Once the MP3 is created, the file is uploaded for hosting along with the new RSS xml file and the feed is generated through Google’s Feedburner.

Podcasting and Big Media

Podcasting has been an avenue for individual content creators to disseminate their information, like a radio show, through the Internet via RSS feeds. Whether you perhaps might consider it a hobby or a serious method of content deployment is immaterial. What has traversed over the years is media companies such as; CNN, ESPN, FOX, etc. re-distributing their television shows and content in the form of Podcasts. Yes technically they are Podcasts; however, are these truly the intent and scope and are individual development of these shows being overshadowed by mainstream media? Waves of Tech does not consider these true podcasts for two primary reasons. First, these are rebroadcasts and repackaging of previously recorded events conducted in a premium studio set. Secondly, where is the independence and voice? The podcast mechanism is being over powered by large media and is distorting the true value of independent content providers. Look at the list of featured podcast providers in iTunes and what do you see? The exposure is radically different and what about advertisement opportunity? As with most anything created in the local bowels of the Internet, big business always ends up coming in late to the game, but going out on top of the backs of truly who provides the nurturing of content and technical advancements. Support independent podcasters and enjoy the truths, opinions and content which you enjoy. Independent Podcasters put forth money, time and vast energy into their shows. Don’t let “Big Media” overtake what so many enjoy.
