Sports Unleashed Episode 29
In this week’s episode, the cast delves deep into the NFC East in Part 2 of their 8 part 2010 NFL divisional previews. There is plenty to pay attention to in this ultra-competitive division. For example, are the Dallas Cowboys going to be able to protect Tony Romo’s blindside, how will the talented, but very young Philadelphia Eagles respond to the loss of Donovan McNabb, can the New York Giants save that defense and can Mike Shanahan and another fresh crop of high-priced free agents bring the magic back to Washington DC? For good measure, the guys give their take on the Dan Haren trade. Enjoy!

– 2010 NFC East Preview. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones vowed to never again allow a dynamic wideout like Randy Moss slip through his hands after the 1997 draft, so, he promptly moved up to nab Dez Bryant. The early indications suggest this was a good move as Bryant has looked great in offseason practices. However, there are a few concerns with this team such as the left tackle and the secondary. The Philadelphia Eagles initiated a youth movement by severing ties with more than a few veteran players. This team has been successful for more than a decade by discarding players a year too early rather than a year too late, but, who will fill the leadership void this year and how will Kevin Kolb respond to adversity? The 2009 New York Giants defense was a complete debacle. The vaunted pass rush was less than spectacular, they didn’t force turnovers, couldn’t stop the run consistently and gave up far too many big plays. Is the addition of Antrel Rolle enough to fix it? We don’t think so. The Washington Redskins should be a very interesting team to watch. The additions of Mike Shanahan, Donovan McNabb among other free agents and a solid draft give Redskins fans plenty of hope for a return to the postseason. Although, there could be some Haynesworth-induced locker room drama to resolve and how is the Portis, Parker and Johnson three-headed monster going to work?
– Angels aquire Dan Haren via trade. Many experts believe the Arizona Diamondbacks didn’t get enough in return for their ace of staff and the SUL cast agrees. Joe Saunders, two minor league pitchers and a player to be named later doesn’t seem like the type of haul worthy of a starting pitcher of Dan Haren’s caliber. This trade reeks of a salary dump for the tight-fisted DBacks as Haren is due $41 million over the next three seasons.

Thank you for your comment Roger. SUL appreciates you as a listener and we always welcome feedback. Granted, the Redskins defense were not world-beaters in 2009, but, they were very solid (10th overall, 8th in passing). Meanwhile, the Giants defense, as you well know, was somewhat disappointing. The Giants D allowed 51 plays of 20+ yards while recording only 32 sacks. It is of our opinion that the Skins D have a better upside. Plus, SUL has a hard time comparing the star power of Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb to Perry Fewell (new DC Coordinator in New York). Thanks again for listening!
