On Wednesday, January 18th, Google, along with Wikipedia, Reddit, WordPress and several other big guns will post their protest to SOPA on their websites or go dark. Check out CNets article on the protest.
This week I was introduced to a new online polling website called Quipol. (SPELL IT). It is without a doubt the most graphically appealing poll creator, allowing you to insert your own graphics. You can post a question, but in addition, you can post a little bit about the question to give your followers some context to the question. Quipol then presents you with either a direct link to your poll or the embed code to add it to your website. You can view the results and add comments by linking to your Twitter or Facebook accounts. Max Yoder, the designer and developer of Quipol is responsive to questions concerning the polling site and answered my emails quickly. It has been used by such high profile sites as Forbes and Wired.
The Giant Slayer is one of the kidlit books that I read last summer and will be using as a read aloud to my students this spring. Along with great story telling, Iain Lawrence has given us a lot of great factual information about the development of the vaccine for polio. The book offers so much for students as a mentor text for concepts like “empathy” “sympathy” and compassion. It is equally as valuable for teaching students about metaphors. Each week I will be featuring a different website or book to spotlight. This week it is all about Colby Sharp. Last week I introduced you to Mr. Shu Reads. Like Frick and Frack. Like Rogers and Hammerstein. Now you have Mr. Shu and Mr. Sharp. Colby Sharp has joined into the Reading Challenges for 2012 in a big way. He has set a goal to read 700 books this year and is already 10 books into it. He is also participating in the Newberry Challenge.
