Despite having arguably the worst season of his long career, Derek Jeter will join a very exclusive club this year. Jeter will soon become the 28th member of the 3,000-hit club. But, the question is, who, if anyone, will be next to join him? Barring injury, Alex Rodriguez should get there in about two years. Pudge Rodriguez and Omar Vizquel are aging part-time players who probably will fall short. Ichiro will have to continue his amazing run for a few more years despite being 37 years old. Albert Pujols will have to remain one of the best hitters in the game for another six or seven seasons to be a member. Some of the younger guys with a chance are Robinson Cano, Troy Tulowitzkiand Miguel Cabrera.
Baseball shouldn’t eliminate collisions at home plate. But baseball should penalize unnecessary collisions at home plate. The distinction is subtle, yet important. There will be plenty of discussion about this topic in light of the catastrophic left leg injury suffered by San Francisco Giants star catcher Buster Posey last week. MLB has made similar rule changes in the past, but, will it happen again?
Take away the 2006 NBA Finals, and Dallas came into Game 1 having beaten Miami 14 straight times. The only team that has lost to any team more times consecutively is Minnesota, which finished with the NBA’s worst record this season. In the Finals, it doesn’t seem to matter. Our hearts say Mavs, but, our brains are telling us Heat.
The Sedin twins, Roberto Luongo and a fierce power play make the Vancouver Canucks the favorites our minds, but you just can’t discount Tim Thomas and the heart of the Boston Bruins. Who will be hoisting the Cup this year?
