Hey everyone! This is Dave, co-host of Waves of Tech, Sports Unleashed, and Flash Past. I’m starting a weekly post covering a range of topics – sports, tech, movies, health, environment, politics, community events, television. Come on in, comment, and join the NetCast Studio community.
The Presidential Campaign & Digital Media
President Obama quite effectively used digital media in his 2008 presidential run. The story is no different in the upcoming elections of 2012. Sarah Palin has over 500,000 followers on Twitter and Mitt Romney announced his campaign committee in a Web video. President Obama continues to run an effective Facebook, Twitter, and White House digital campaign. We have seen presidential hopefuls hire “big time” movie makers to produce visually stunning and cinematically beautiful campaign ads. What’s in the digital bank from campaign strategists? Who can know but it sure seems to keep me on edge.
2011 NFL Draft
This has been the most interested draft in history. Roger Goodell is initially booed by the fans and he tries his best to deflect the attacks. Teams haven’t been able to sign free agents and are therefore left to fill the voids with some hopeful draft picks. The CBA is still in some sort of judicial circle of confusion and players are still not allowed into team buildings. Even with all this going on, fans and media are stuck to this draft like every other of the past. We can’t avoid it. We can’t escape it. We are still intrigued and still sit in anticipation as our team’s next selection comes to the board. The NFL is not suffering from this lockout. Why? The NFL is a narcotic.
Health Tip – The Outdoor & The Heat
Many of us enjoy the comfort of an air conditioned home and office setting. As the spring season moves forward and the temperatures continue to rise, let’s be aware of the transition from the office to outdoor activities. Maybe its yard work or playing soccer outside. Maybe its finishing up a construction project or working on the car. Remember that there is an adjustment period when working in warm weather conditions. “If you’re working outdoors, you’re at risk for heat-related illnesses that can cause serious medical problems and even death,” said Secretary Solis of the US Labor Department. Heat illness can be prevented by taking these simple measures: water, rest, and shade. Be safe, be smart, and be aware when it comes to the heat.
EPA Honors Well Deserving Organizations & Individuals
This week, the Federal EPA honored 18 organizations and individuals with Environmental Quality Awards for their achievements protecting public health and the environment. Folks were honored from a variety of places – US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and New Jersey. One story that stands out is that of Audrey Penn. She created a program entitled “School Kids in the Park” (SKIP) as a way of introduction youth to environmental issues. Over 600 students participated in 2010 alone. She continues to work for “Friends of the Virgin Islands National Park,” focusing on environmental education. A big thank you to Ms. Penn for providing such a neat way of conveying environmental issues of the 21st Century.
