The myth and legend of The Alamo continues to capture the minds and spirits of the American people. A testament to this is the nearly 3 million visitors to The Alamo on an annual basis. Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. The siege and final battle of the Alamo in 1836 constitutes the most celebrated military engagement in Texas history. The thing that makes The Alamo so distinct in American history is that we are celebrating a defeat, something that we as a nation and people do not typically do. The story of The Alamo centers around national pride, legacy, redemption, beliefs, values, and defense. Follow Steve and Dave as they look back into the history of The Alamo, touching on the defenders, the enemies, the battles, and the way of life.

Henry Kissinger, the 56th Secretary of State of the United States, was an international man of mystery in every way.

Kissinger was born in Germany to a middle class Jewish family and fought his way over to the United States around 15 years of age. He served in the US Army and quickly moved into the discipline of military intelligence. From that point forward, it was nothing but magic for Kissinger. A man known today for his amazing ability to massage international conflict, his mark on international politics and policy is quoted often and early in discussion. He bridged the divides that many thought were impossible at the time. In close collaboration with Nixon, he created a détente policy that called for an end to the Cold War and for friendly relations with both the Soviet Union and China. A truly amazing feat for Kissinger. He was known as a “lone ranger” of world affairs, traveling the globe, conducting secret meetings and covert operations with little oversight. This created plenty of tension between the White House, Congressional Members, and international diplomats. This week, Steve and Dave take a walk down the path of memorials and tributes. A National Memorial is a designation in the United States for a protected area that memorializes a historic person or event. Surprisingly, there are only 28 national memorials that are owned and administered by the National Park Service. We start with a look into some of the newest memorials in the US, Flight 93 or MLK Jr. We finish with the breathtaking memorial dedicated to those who fought in the Vietnam War. Tributes are quite a bit different in respect to memorials. Tributes are personal deliveries from one person to another, out of life-long respect and honor. Which tributes stand out in your minds? Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring (‘62), is often credited with launching the environmental movement in the United States. In the late 1960s, citizens began to demand more attention to be given to air pollution and water quality. From these two factors, the EPA was born in 1970. Created under the Presidency of Richard M. Nixon in 1970 following the nation’s first Earth Day, the EPA’s objective has been to promote the enhancement of the environment. Over the past 40 years, the EPA has focused on a wide variety of environmental issues – air quality, food protection, water quality, hazardous waste disposal, energy conservation, toxic releases, water conservation, ozone standards, environmental justice, and fugitive individuals. The history of pets and people has a very interesting origin. We often forget that our furry, dirty, scaly, and smelly friends once took care of themselves out there in Mother Nature. We have brought them into our homes either for companionship, friendship, protection, or ornamental reasons. Whatever the case may be, how did domestication start. Birds were originally domesticated for communication purposes while cats were domesticated for rodent and pest control. What other animals and things have we domesticated over the years: plants, goats, cows, ferrets, snakes, sheep, alpacas, llamas, pigeons, horses!! The list could go on for days and this is the path we take you down on this week’s Flash Past podcast. The first Toyota dealership in the United States was on October 31, 1957 as Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., at the location of a former Rambler dealership in Hollywood, Ca. The first Toyota car registered in the United States was a 1958 Toyopet, sold in 1958.

2. Where was the first McDonalds?
In 1948 brothers Mac and Dick MacDonald renovated their barbecue restaurant to become a drive-in hamburger restaurant. The first McDonald’s was located in San Bernardino, California at the intersection of 14th and E Streets.

3. Where was the first shopping mall?
The first shopping mall was the Country Club Plaza and opened near Kansas City, Mo., in 1922. The first enclosed mall called Southdale opened in Edina, Minnesota in 1956.

4. Where was the first Sears?
1925 Chicago, Ill.

Fort Sumter, SC.

6. Where was the first KFC?

In the light of Mother’s Day, we decided to Flash Past to Women’s History Month. The first celebration of women’s history grew out of the small town of Sonoma, California and became officially recognized by the US in 1987. Women’s History Month is acknowledged to honor the creativity, courage, and ingenuity of women throughout history. We can points to female figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Sojourner Truth, and Amelia Earhart that led the way as humanitarians, abolitionist, and pioneers. Women have proudly served and worked in the Armed Forces since WW-I and proudly led the country’s manufacturing industry during WW-II. Join us as we venture through time, look back at famous firsts in women’s history, and highlight the incredible things women has accomplished.

Did You Know?
To coincide with Women’s History Month 2011, the White House issued a 50-year progress report on the status of women in the United States. It found that younger women are now more likely than their male counterparts to hold a college degree and that the number of men and women in the labor force has nearly equalized.

Just as man has evolved throughout the years and adapted to the surrounding environment, so as news. This week we discuss “the news,” then and now. We begin by taking a trip back to the times of cavemen, hieroglyphics, the town crier, and the telegraph. We find some interesting bits of information along the way. News feeds of today are so plentiful. An important component of news today is still the newspaper and magazine business, whether that source is via paper or electronic. We have TV and network stations that specialize in local, regional, state, domestic, or international news. The recent events of Lybia, the Royal Wedding, and the killing of Bin Laden demonstrates the power of social media. Join us as we flash past to news sources, then and now.

April 29th, 2011 will complete an 19-year run for the Space Shuttle Endeavour as it will complete its final flight to space. STS-134 will be commanded by Mark Kelly, husband of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. In total, the Endeavour has completed 25 missions and brought 138 crew members into the great beyond. Taking flight for the first time in May of 1992, the Endeavour has taken over ten flights to work on the International Space Station and has provided countless additions to the worlds of science, education, American history, and domestic pride. In this week’s episode, we comb through Endeavour’s past and provide some very cool historical facts that even took us by surprise. Tune in and be a part of Space Shuttle history!

The Roaring 20s were an age of great social and political change. The decade experienced its ups and downs, its highs and lows, and its fair share of cultural shifting. The decade took shape with events such as The Prohibition, the rarely discussed Great Migration, and ended with the Great Depression in 1929. The names of Al Capone, Woodrow Wilson, and Henry Ford strike a chord when reliving the 1920s. Each of these events and persons shaped the cultural and society dynamics of the time. Did you know that Pensacola is America’s oldest European settlement? A lot of people give that credit to St. Augustine, FL… but they do so erroneously. Pensacola was actually founded before St. Augustine, but a hurricane wiped out the settlement and it wasn’t resettled for over 100 years. St. Augustine has been constantly inhabited since its founding. Pensacola is also the birthplace of Florida. It was here, in Plaza Ferdinand, named after King Ferdinand VII, that Florida was ceded by Spain to the United States in 1821.

Pensacola is also the cradle of Naval Aviation and the home of the Blue Angels and the National Museum of Naval Aviation. The guys talk flying, museums, restaurants, clubs, music, and of course, fun. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Steve, you may not know, served 21 years in the Air Force. He reminded us how hard it is for the families who remain behind when military personnel are deployed in battle as well as in peace time. Dan, on the other hand, has never been in the military and never had a desire to. He tells us that there are a couple of different types of people; those who are or can be suited for military life and those who aren’t. He’s a member of the latter but thankful to all of the people who do serve.

FP35-Time Zones and Daylight Savings

Greenwich Mean Time was established in the 1600s but it wasn’t until the mid 1800s that an actual geographic time zone was created. Many time zone boundaries are defined by terrain. Rail routes between larger cities also served to define these lines. Each railroad line kept its own time standard and, as a result, stations had to have a clock for each rail company.

Daylight Savings Time has had an interesting run. Some places observe it, some don’t, and some never did. Many countries along the equator have never observed DST because there is so little change in the amount of daylight. Listen to episode 35 of the show to see what kind of conversation these facts brought on.

Supposedly, in the 9th Century an Ethopian goat herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats were full of energy after having eaten the berries from a particular plant. His story doesn’t appear in writing until 1671 so the truth behind it is a bit questionable. After several years the bitter pick me up made its way across Africa and into Europe. Eventually it even made it to North America to be sold for $6 mixed with sugar and milk.

The guys also discuss colas, including the original cola – Coca Cola. They then move on to talk about tea, energy drinks and the caffeine quantities in various beverages. Did you know that there are 330mg of caffeine in a 16oz Starbucks coffee or a whopping 1.2mg in Canada Dry Diet cola?

Hook and loop fasteners (Velcro) which was invented in 1941 by a Swiss engineer. This product has had an interesting life cycle. It invaded popular fashion in the 80s but now is relegated to doing chores and holding kids’ shoes on.

Flashlights came into being shortly after the dry cell battery became a power option. IN the late 1800s the first flashlight was a paper tube with two D cell batteries and a light on the end. The NYPD liked them and so development continued and the product, over 115 years or so, has become what it is today.

The microwave is much, much older than most people think. It was actually invented in 1945 when Percy Spencer, an engineer, noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket was melting while he was building magnetrons. The first commercially available microwaves were huge and hugely expensive. Now they’re so cheap that they’re nearly disposable.

Got something sticky on your hand? What is that, tree sap? Birch bark tar was the first form of glue that was used… approximately 200,000 BC. Glue has come a long way since then but it is still basically a sticky substance that people use to join this to that.

Calculators, paint rollers, washing machines, electric razors and power tools but you’ll have to listen to find out what they think about these inventions.

Motorhomes can be traced back to the days of the pioneers who traveled across the country living in Conestoga wagons. These wagons provided shelter from the sun and a certain level of comfort for travel. The RV as we know it today got its start around 1910 when conversion vans were made for travel. Basically, what these were resembled delivery vans with a place to sleep and eventually a place to do your business.

Pierce Arrow, Auto Kamp and the Los Angeles Trailer Works were among the first manufacturers of these roadworthy homes. Later producers include Winnebago and Airstream along with myriad companies producing campers based on various truck and van platforms.

During the Great Depression travel trailers became permanent housing for many who were looking for an inexpensive alternative to homeownership. Living in such a home also provided the ability to quickly and easily uproot and move to where the jobs were rumored to be. The end of WWII found many returning vets looking for an inexpensive place to live. What America got was the birth of the trailer park.

A lot of people believe that fast food originated with the giant, McDonald’s but they’re wrong. The first fast food restaurant was White Castle which was founded in 1921. In the early days of the hamburger people believed the ground beef to be spoiled meat and floor sweepings. White Castle came along and tried to change this opinion. The name inspired trust and suggested quality and the building, painted white, reinforced this facade. Additionally, you could see the whole food-making process from beginning to end in a White Castle restaurant.

In 1932 White Castle’s southern cousin Krystal came along and it wasn’t until 1940 that the McDonald brothers opened their doors. Though they weren’t the first on the scene they definitely perfected the fast food assembly line process and have since been imitated by myriad other restaurants.

1941 brought us Carl’s Jr. and it wasn’t until 1960 that its brother, Hardee’s, came along. Other contenders looking for your fast food dollars are Jack in the Box (1951), Burger King (1953), Arby’s (1964) and Wendy’s (1969).

Other types of fast food restaurants include chicken places like KFC, Church’s and Popeye’s. There are also fish restaurants like Captain D’s and Long John Silver’s. Mexican food (kind of) came onto the scene in the form of Taco Bell and there are even sandwich shops like Subway and Quizno’s.

There is debate over what the qualifiers are for a restaurant to be considered fast food… are French fries a requirement? Taco Bell doesn’t have them and they’re definitely fast food. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Around 400 BC the Chinese developed kites, some believe, to be used as part of religious rituals. They have, throughout time, been used for everything from fun to fighting. Hot air balloons were developed around 200 AD but their use as a form of transportation didn’t begin until the late 1700s when Jacques Montgolfier floated some livestock around for a few minutes. By the 1850s George Cayley was thinking of moving man via glider. 1903 rolls around to find the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, and Samuel Langley separately working on inventions that they hope will forever change the way that people get from place to place. The Wright brothers were the only ones who were right. Less than 25 years after the Wright brothers make history Charles Lindbergh makes aviation history by being the first man to complete a solo trans-Atlantic flight. He was followed five years later by Amelia Earhart.

Beginning in the late/mid 19th century people began to put motors on bicycles. This type of innovation spread across Europe and several motorized bikes were developed at roughly the same time. As a result, motorcycles don’t have a clearly defined beginning machine however it was likely steam powered.

Early motorcycle producers included Germans Daimler and Maybach, France’s Perreaux. Other European motorcycle producers include BMW, Triumph, Ducati and Norton, among many others.

Harley Davidson and Indian were the first American motorcycle companies and they were competing for the same audience. The 60s and 70s brought an influx of Japanese made motorcycles. They were less expensive and more reliable than their American made counterparts. Eventually American products regained their reputation but there were already thousands of loyal owners of bikes made by Suzuki, Honda and Kawasaki among others.

Joe Louis: The “Brown Bomber” is arguably the best boxer in history. He held the world heavyweight boxing title longer than anyone in history, twelve years. He would successfully defend the title 25 times, scoring 20 knockouts. His first loss came from Max Schmeling in 1936. He would go another 14 years until his next loss.

Pete Rose: Rose is one the of the greatest hitters in the history of Major League Baseball. He compiled over 4,200 hits and earned 17 All Star appearances. With his three World Series rings, a Rookie of the Year award, and three batting titles, he earns his legendary status in MLB history. The gambling allegations in the 80s tarnished a perfect career.

George Blanda: “The Grand Old Man” had the distinction of playing 26 seasons of Professional Football, the most in the sport’s history. He holds numerous football records: one of two players to play in four decades, 1st player to score over 2,000 points, and most passing TDs in a game to name a few. He was inducted as a first ballot Hall of Famer in 1981.

Jim Thorpe: Thorpe played in a time a racial inequality and spawned the growth of Native Americans into domestic and international sports. He is considered to be one of the most versatile athletes in modern sports, playing football, baseball, and basketball. As an Olympian, he won gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon.

Carl Lewis: Before Lewis, Track & Field drew limited attention in the US. The 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles would make Lewis a household name in America. Lewis won 10 Olympic medals and 10 World Championship medals, 17 of his 20 medals were Gold medals. He was an image of American sports and represented the sport and the nation finely.

Arnold Palmer: Palmer compiled 94 professional golf victories including 7 major championships. The majority of his wins came in the years of 1960-1963 where he won 24 PGA Tour events and dominated the competition. Palmer helped with the founding of the Golf Channel and clearly loved the game of golf and respected its heritage.

Willie Shoemaker: Willie won 11 Triple Crown races and was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1958. Winning his first race at the age of 15, Willie would go on to record a total of 8,833 career victories.

Muhammad Ali: Being a 3-time World Heavyweight champion places Ali in the top three boxers of all time. He is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame and holds victories over seven other inductees. Ali also defeated every top heavyweight in his era, which has been called the “Golden Age” of boxing. He made headlines with his outspoken criticism of the Vietnam War.

Arthur Ashe: Professional tennis player known for his humanitarian efforts during retirement.

Billy Jean King: An advocate against sexism in sports and society, founder of humanitarian organizations.

Johnny Unitas: The “Golden Arm” made 10 Pro Bowl appearances and won 4 MVP Awards.

Babe Ruth: The Bambino defied the odds with his off-the-field antics and holds several MLB records.

After a week off Dan and Steve are rested and ready for excitement. The topic this week, July 11 – 17, is roller coasters.

Did you know that the beginning of the age of the “thrill ride” began with Catherine the Great? In fact, in Spanish and French, roller coasters are referred to as Russian Mountains. These slides were wooden frames covered in snow and ice. The evolution of the coaster takes us from these snowy hills past mine trains with switchbacks to wooden structures with rises and falls to tubular steel structures that try to leave your stomach a few hundred feet away from the rest of your body. There are even “coasters” that are actually just pods that are hydraulically powered to give the impression and sensation of actually riding a coaster without the danger.

The guys talk about the coasters that they’ve ridden and give impressions of them. Some of them hurt, some jabbed in places that they shouldn’t and one changed Dan’s perspective on thrill rides. Was it a positive or a negative change? Coney Island, Disney World, Six Flags over Georgia all the way to Disneyland and Steve has only ridden two coasters.

This week on the show Steve and Dan talk about Independence Day. In 1776 a group of smart people got together and created a document that outlined the injustices that had been suffered by the citizens of the American colonies at the hands of their English King. The smart authors go on to declare that the colonies will have no further obligation to the crown and that America will now be independent states. That document is called the Declaration of Independence.

Dan and Steve talk about what it was, or might have been like, at the first 4th of July celebrations. They also talk about grilling, illegal fireworks and small town, all-day festivities. Did you know that Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be America’s bird for the great seal?

Timeline

June 1776 – A committee was formed to create the formal Declaration of Independence. Lead by Thomas Jefferson with the assistance of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.

June 28, 1776 – Thomas Jefferson presents the first draft of the declaration to congress.

July 4, 1776 – A vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor of the Declaration; 2, Pennsylvania and South Carolina voted No; Delaware was undecided and New York abstained.

August 1776 – The signing of the Declaration of Independence began on 4 July but was’t actually completed until August.
July 4, 1777 – The first Independence Day celebration takes place.

Fun Facts

○     The only place where the flag is never flown at half-mast is the moon.
○     Our national mascot, the bald eagle, can achieve speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour when making a predatory dive
○     “The Star-Spangled Banner” started out as a poem named “The Defense of Fort M’Henry” and was written on the back of an envelope
○     More hot dogs are consumed on the 4th of July than any other day of the year
