We never thought Saturday morning cartoons would make its way into our podcast conversation, but it did this week.  We discuss the availability of child content from Dave’s childhood to today’s on-demand lifestyle.  Also, we have a lengthy discussion on teenage texting while driving as compared to drunk driving and we both agree to a 30-Day Challenge – our cell phones will be off while behind the wheel for the next 30 days.  Will you join us?  Share your experiences with us at @NetCastStudio and @rollerderbydave. #30DayChallenge

Saturday Morning Cartoons

In a seemingly routine trip to the bank, Dave had a conversation with a teller that truly reflects the state of on-demand content, specifically cartoons.  We remember the thrill of Saturday morning cartoons and the buzz kill that occurred at 10am when cartoons were done.  Well, with the content readily available, there are very limited restrictions on where, when, and how frequently we can tune in to catch cartoons and movies.  Here the story and share your own story by sending us your comments at feedback@netcaststudio.com!

Texting While Driving or Drunk Driving – What kills more?

In a very disheartening and eye-opening new study coming forth from New York’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center, teenage deaths and injuries related to texting while driving has now surpassed deaths and injuries related to drunk driving.  An estimated 3,000 teenagers die and 300,000 teenagers are injured due to this simple act of texting while driving a vehicle.  There are laws in place to deter and punish such action but are seemingly proving to be less than effective right now.  What is the solution?  A shift in cultural acceptance and behavior change.  We can take a step in the right direction with one simple change.  Join the Waves of Tech crew as we accept the 30-Day Challenge – our cell phones will be off while behind the wheel.

There are currently a lot of great stories in the world of sports technology and it’s hard to make sense of all of them.  Rick takes some time tonight to answer some questions and give his opinions.  Steve joins in to talk with Rick.

Discussion

1.  So much going on with technology and sports.  It doesn’t matter which sport?

2. Social media beating newspapers and TV to the punch with breaking news.  What’s its impacts?

3.  Technology and the new rule in golf and how it impacts how TV covers and how we watch golf.

4.   ABC and the fact it has announced it will air live news and sports on their own app.  Does this change viewing habits?

5. Google Glass and impact on sports.  The good and the bad.

We have a packed podcast in this week’s episode of Waves of Tech.  The Internet Sales Tax debate has pushed through the Senate and heads to the House for debate.  YouTube is beginning partnerships with large enterprises to bring a paid subscription-based policy on board.  And finally, we discuss some of the off-the-wall and not so smart things we do on our smartphones.

Senate passes Internet sales tax

The way in which consumers shop has drastically changed the past decade.  The major shift from brick-and-mortar stores to online shopping has changed the landscape of shopping habits, tax revenues, and corporate development.  The debate over an Internet sales tax bill has been brewing for many years and has now passed the Senate and heads to the House for debate.  With some pending exemptions to be determined, online retailers, who have gathered nearly $226 billion last year alone, that have a presence in an individual state will have to pay state tax.  Are you a fan of this debate or not….let us know.

Youtube paid channels

YouTube could launch its paid subscription service for some of its specialty video channels as early as this week, reports are stating.  The alleged subscription service could give YouTube and content providers another revenue stream.  YouTube has reached out to only a handful of content providers and producers, such as Howcast and The Onion, in developing a suitable platform.  Advertising on YouTube and rival video sites has risen fast, from $2.93 billion to $4.14 billion in 2013.  This is a major revenue stream YouTube wants to tap in to.

Things we do on our smartphones

In a very interesting post on NBCnews.com’s GadgetBox column, a journalist provided an extensive list of dumb things we do with our smartphones.  We can all probably make a list in our heads right now of a personal list of dumb things, either things we do or things we don’t like.  Are you guilty of any of these:  Take and post an excessive amount of food pictures?  Settle arguments via text?  Too much walking and surfing?

Steve, Rick and Steve hosted an episode on the Tech Podcast Network.  The first public Web Site became available 20 years ago and we discuss where we have been and where we are going in the world of technology.

A Journey Back in Tech Time

The first public Web Page – How has this changed our lives?
The first public site on the world wide web made its debut on April 30, 1992.  The web was born in a European science lab known as CERN.  The first page was a very rudimentary text-only primer, setting the stage for a revolution in the tech industry.  In celebration of this twenty-year anniversary, let’s talk about the beginning of the world wide web, what it has become, and how has this changed our lives.

The world wide web was originally stated as being “a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents.”  In looking at how the web changed our lives, we can first look at academia and the host of information available for research and knowledge.  It altered the manner in which we communicate by providing a variety of platforms to conduct relationships.  The web spawned an entire economic era of prosperity as well.  With the good comes the bad and we have all experienced what it’s like to either lose personal data, have personal data stolen, or be subject to Internet scams.

You can check out the web page, reposted to it’s original URL

Rick’s Gadget review –  HTC One paired with the PowerBag
In the world we live in, we can’t survive without technology at our fingertips.  The HTC One is such a sleek and fast Android smartphone. It’s easy to use, with a great camera, a even Dr. Dre Beats speakers.  Keep your gadgets charged while you are on the move with a PowerBag.  It charges up to 4 gadgets while they are stored in the bag.  Don’t let your gadgets run out of juice.
