It is a Merry Cliffmas in Philadelphia as the team surprised the baseball world by signing Cliff Lee to a five-year, $120 million contract with a vesting option for a sixth year. The Yankees offered him a contract worth $154 million. Never underestimate familiarity as a major factor that players use to make big decisions. Lee liked Philadelphia. He knew the landscape. Bags of money can’t buy that feeling of security. Going down the list, the Phils have Roy Oswalt, Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and now Lee. The Phillies will be the odds-on favorite to win it all next year as long as they can stay healthy.
NFL Week 15 will do a lot to confirm who will be in the playoffs and who won’t. So far, the New England Patriots are the only team to secure a playoff spot. You have a big game in Indianapolis as the Jaguars come to town, the Eagles go play the Giants and the Jets travel to Pittsburgh. The Patriots face the Packers in a game that will decide the Packers’ playoff future, and the Saints travel to Baltimore in what is sure to be a very intense game. Dave and Ryan both have a close on on the Chiefs in St. Louis to play the Rams. The Chiefs showed last week their offense doesn’t work with Brodie Croyle behind center. As of right now, Matt Cassel is planning on playing Sunday, but his effectiveness will have to be questioned. The St. Louis Rams are an NFC West team, but they might be the ones to win the division, and they have Sam Bradford, who is as good as advertised.

Editorial
It is apparent the NFL and broadcast media must re-examine the practice of switching games prior to a games end. Case in point. This past weekend a potential game tying pass was thrown by the Oakland Raiders and while the ball was in the air I was on my feet in anticipation; however, the broadcast was switched to another starting game. Well….. actually not the starting of a game……they were still in warm-up and pre-show. If the NFL believes it is bigger than it’s viewership and fans, you are mistaken. No matter what team you are a fan of, don’t you believe it’s more important for any fan to see the completion of a game rather than an opening kick off of a new game. You have destroyed the faith, the desire and the excitement of the game by rolling over to regional media and big dollars.
